Visit Scotland: Edinburgh Castle

While Glasgow is Scotland’s most populated city, Edinburgh remains the nation’s capital, and is home to the Scottish parliament at Holyrood. There are a huge array of historic locations to visit in the cities old town, but the attraction which literally dominates Edinburgh, is the Castle, which sits on a volcanic crag at the top of the famous Royal Mile, and can be seen from all across the city.
The castle has been home to many Scottish monarchs over the centuries, including Mary Queen of Scots, who gave birth to James VI in the Royal Palace in 1566, and visitors can view the Scottish Crown Jewells and the historic Stone of Destiny – returned to Scotland in 1996.
A guided tour is highly recommended, but as the castle can be very busy at peak times, it is recommended to book in advance.
