Visit Scotland: Eilean Donan Castle
Situated on a small tidal island at the meeting of three lochs (Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh) in Scotland’s western Highlands, Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in the world and it’s easy to see why.The beautiful thirteenth century storybook castle was the traditional stronghold of Clan Mackenzie and since its restoration in the early 20th century, has been connected to the mainland by a stony footbridge.
Visitors can wander round the castle’s grounds and explore the internal rooms – home to period furniture, Jacobean artifacts, displays of weapons and fine art.
In the surrounding lochs, lucky tourists can catch glimpses of diverse wildlife including porpoise, dolphins, otters and various birdlife.
