Visit Scotland: The Wallace Monument & Stirling Castle

The Wallace Monument

Situated at the summit of Abbey Craig, just outside Stirling, the Wallace Monument was constructed in the 19th century to commemorate Sir William Wallace, the 13th century Scottish patriot who led the Scots to memorable victories over the occupying English Army. It is said that Wallace stood atop the Abbey Craig hill and watched the gathering army of King Edward 1, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
Visitors to the monument can climb the 246 step spiral staircase to the viewing gallery at the top where they will be treated to stunning views across the Ochil hills and the Forth Valley and inside the monument are various artificats which are believed to have belonged to Wallace – including The Wallace Sword, a 1.63m long sword weighing almost 3 kilograms.
Situated right in the heart of Stirling itself is Stirling Castle, which is one of Scotland’s most important castles, both historically and architecturally. Visitors can explore the grounds and take advantage of regular guided tours of the castle’s historic halls and vaults.
