Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in both Scotland and the UK, standing at 1,344 metres above sea level (4,409ft).
Despite its scale, Nevis is not a particularly challenging climb. A very good path goes all the way to the top and, in fair weather, most people with a reasonable level of fitness should be perfectly capable of reaching Britain’s highest point. The time it takes can be anything from 4 hours up and down, to 10 hours, so plan accordingly dependent on the time of year, daylight etc.
For more experienced climbers there is an alternative route, which takes in the neighbouring Carn Mor Dearg (also a munro) and accesses Nevis from the North via an arete.
Nevis overlooks the town of Fort William, which has a wide range of facilities and activities on offer and it’s also worth paying a visit to Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is just a short drive away, and was the location for the ‘Hogwarts Express’ bridge scenes in the Harry Potter movies.
